5 ways how to get from Bangkok to Koh Tao

There are a variety of options on how to get from Bangkok to Koh Tao and no, there is no ‘best’ way. It depends on your budget, arrival time in Bangkok and also how much in advance you are booking your trip. If you are booking ahead of time, the flight prices are a lot cheaper and a good alternative to the train and bus. Last but not least, it obviously also depends on you personal preference of travel method. One thing they all have in common is the ferry ride, as Koh Tao does not have an airport. So no matter how you plan it, you will end up on a ferry for the last leg. You can book these tickets directly at the pier, which usually is ok but not recommended around full moon party time and in peak season like August and Christmas/New Year. 1. By bus and ferry (Bangkok – Chumphon – Koh Tao)

How to get from bangkok to koh tao by bus, mapThe most popular way to get from Bangkok to Koh Tao is by bus & ferry. The Lomprayah bus departs from Khao San Road in Bangkok at two times: 06:00 (arrival Koh Tao 14:45) and 21:00 (arrival Koh Tao 08:45). The bus ride is approx. 7 hours and will take you directly to the pier in Chumphon. It takes about 2.5 hours by ferry from Chumphon to Koh Tao. The connection is great but you will sit in a bus for a long time. Songserm offers a similar trip, however we recommend Lomprayah.

2. By train and ferry (Bangkok – Chumphon – Koh Tao) 

How to get from bangkok to koh tao by train, mapMore comfort but worse connection you have if you travel by night train. It leaves Bangkok at 19:30 and arrives in Chumphon at 04:15 the next morning. Inside tip: book the lower sleeper berth, we recommend the air-conditioned option. Then a minibus picks you up at Chumphon train terminal bringing you to the ferry which leaves 07:00 and arrives on Koh Tao at 08:45 or 09:30. Please be aware that trains in Thailand are notoriously delayed and not recommended if you are on a tight schedule.

3. By plane and ferry (Bangkok – Chumphon – Koh Tao)

How to get from bangkok to koh tao by plane, mapYou can fly from Bangkok, Don Muang Airport to Chumphon Airport with Nok Air. The flight time is only about 1 hour. From Chumphon airport, you will be transferred  to the pier where you take the ferry to Koh Tao. Sailing time is approx. 1.5 hours between Koh Tao and Chumphon, transfer time from the airport approx. 45 mins. Departure is at 05:45 from Don Muag Airport, arrival on Koh Tao at 15:00. Latest possible flight is at 12:50, which will get you to Koh tao at 19:15.  Flight & ferry combo can be booked directly on their homepage.

4. By plane and ferry (Bangkok – Koh Samui – Koh Tao)

How to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui by plane, mapYou can also fly from Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Samui via Bangkok Airways. The flight time is approx. 1 hour. This option is usually more expensive than flying to Chumphon but offers the best connections. In Koh Samui you have the choice between the Seatran and Lomprayah ferry which leave at around 08:30, 12:30 and 17:00. Sailing time is approx. 2.5 hours between the islands. From the airport to the Seatran pier the transfer is 10 mins, to the Lomprayah pier instead it’s about 45 mins, therefore we recommend Seatran.

5. By plane and ferry (Bangkok – Surat Thani – Koh Tao)

How to get from Bangkok to Koh Surat Thani by plane, mapThe last flight option is from Bangkok, Don Muang Airport to Surat Thani Airport with Air Asia. The flight time is again about 1h15min. You can book an ‘all-in’ fare including the transfer from the airport to the Seatran pier and the ferry ticket to Koh Tao. Sailing time is approx. 4 hours between Surat Thani and Koh Tao, transfer time from the airport to the pier approx. 1.5 hours. You can leave Bangkok at 07:00 or 09:30 and arrive on Koh Tao at 14:30 or 18:30. The connections are good but you have the longest transfer time from the airport and the longest ferry ride.
